In this section we highlight a few products that we recommend to watch. It is not our intention to completely cover the market and name every product in a particular area. Apart from this, we simply cannot be aware of all available products. The omission of a product on our watchlist does not imply that we disapprove of it.
Business Process Modeling Tools
Business Process Modeling tools are increasingly used by organizations that must create new, adaptable processes to remain competitive. Tools that allow business analysts to create semantically rich process models are desperately needed. Business process modeling is a process in its own right encompassing several activities (tasks), most notably, process design process simulation, process analysis and process optimization.
For several years, business process modeling tools have often been used in a stand-alone fashion. Now, such tools are becoming part of Business Process Integration Systems (BPIS).
Jenz & Partner has released an Evaluation Specification, which helps with the evaluation of Business Process Modeling Tools. The Evaluation Specification can be customized using the Evaluation Specification Editor to meet the organization's specific needs. The Evaluation Specification Editor is part of the Evaluator's Application Suite (EAS), which helps speed up the evaluation process.

Business Process Integration Systems (BPIS)
A BPIS (a.k.a. BPMS) incorporates a collection of tools, minimally consisting of a business process modeling tool, a deployment tool, a process engine and an administration tool. More advanced products include development tools, a process measurement and analysis tool, application integration adapters, and a business rule engine.
Please note that only single-source BPMS product suites are included in the table below. Some BPMS vendors offer suites that require a customer to license one or more additional products from another vendor in order to form a complete solution (e.g. Holosofx BPM Suite and IBM MQSeries Workflow). However, since we still expect the list of single-source product suites to grow (e.g. Intalio BPMS being a candidate in the short-term), we decided not to include multiple-source product suites.
Increasingly, BPMS vendors are jumping on the e-business bandwagon. However, most vendors promise much more than they actually deliver.

Business Rule Tools and Expert System Shells
Business rules technology standardizes and automates much of an organization’s business and decision-making processes, removing to some extent the human element that is prone to inconsistency and human error. Business rules determine what action should be taken based on an organization’s internal guidelines, business practices and/or regulatory compliance requirements. For example, business rules might determine a loan applicant’s credit eligibility.
Business rule tools help with speeding-up time to market, improving consistency across the organization by making the same decisions the same way with one centralized set of rules, and saving money on the software development work.
